1Perplexity opens its toolkit to safely run AI agents at scale
On Friday, October 16, 2026, Perplexity released under Apache 2.0 license the internal technology powering its Computer agent : SPACE, a software toolkit that isolates each agent inside a tiny virtual machine. The internal stress test was brutal : nine large AI models, four sandbox configurations, one hundred and eight attempts combining sandbox escapes and unauthorized network access. Result : zero documented leak, even when attackers were allowed to read the SPACE source code. It is the second time in 2026 that an open toolkit of this kind has published its proof of invulnerability, after OpenClaw earlier this year. For most people, it is as if a pizza delivery company decided to publish the exact recipe of its explosion-proof cold room and showed that one hundred and eight poisoning attempts had failed : small caterers can now copy the setup, and customers can sleep well. 2Anthropic lets an outside audit team sit at the same table as its own employees
On Thursday, October 15, 2026, Anthropic announced a first for the industry : six METR employees, working for an independent AI risk evaluation firm, are receiving a laptop, a desk, and the same internal tool access as Anthropic's own teams. METR may publish its analyses without prior Anthropic approval, with the few redactions limited to client secrets, confidential information, and internal architecture details. This step is part of a three-tier audit framework established the same day : Tier 1 by Accenture, Tier 2 by SecureBio and Faculty, Tier 3 by METR. It fits within the agreement signed the same day at the White House with OpenAI, Google, Meta, Nvidia and xAI. For most people, it is as if an aircraft manufacturer handed the cockpit keys to independent test pilots and told them : you can publish everything you see, unfiltered. 3Builder.io releases a free framework for building your own agent-driven apps
On Tuesday, October 14, 2026, Builder.io released in beta a free TypeScript framework called Agent-Native, designed for building AI-agent applications. Its distinctive feature : the same action blocks can be used across six different surfaces, from the application window to the web server, via the conversational agent, the command-line tool, the MCP protocol, and the A2A agent-to-agent language. The framework supports Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, OpenRouter or even Ollama running locally. Three alpha applications are already using it : a video-clip creation tool, a slide generator, and a design tool. For most people, it is as if a modular kitchen maker decided to publish the plans of its drawers so other craftsmen could plug in their own appliances, instead of having to buy everything from the same brand. 4Ant Group releases a 560-billion-parameter AI model in the open
On Tuesday, October 14, 2026, Ant Group, the fintech arm of Chinese giant Alibaba, released on Hugging Face the MIT weights of its new open model, Ling-3.1-flash : five hundred and sixty billion parameters in total, twenty-five billion active per prompt, a one-million-token window, and a hybrid linear-MoE architecture mixing sixty-three linear layers with nine attention layers. The model scores forty-one on the Artificial Analysis benchmark, runs at two hundred and ten tokens per second, and fits on just four Hopper GPUs in compressed format. It is built for long-horizon coding and to power agents. Ant Group hinted that LingCode, its coding-specialised variant with a Pi-based harness, will also be released open-source at a later date. For most people, it is as if a major Chinese bank decided to publish the source code of its credit-scoring software, saying : you can check it, improve it, and run it on your own servers. 5Reflection AI hits back at China with a 501-billion open model
On Friday, October 16, 2026, Reflection AI, an American startup founded by former DeepMind researchers, released under Apache 2.0 license the weights of Beam 1.0 : an agent-focused sparse-MoE model of five hundred and one billion parameters, with twenty-three billion active. Training involved running twenty-three point eight trillion tokens through the model over four weeks, then letting it work through more than one hundred million simulated scenarios on ten thousand five hundred newest-generation GB300 Blackwell chips. Result : around eighty per cent success on the Terminal-Bench twenty-five-thousand test. The company claims three to four times more energy efficiency than the Chinese GLM 5.2 and more than four times that of other Western open-weight models. FP8 and NVFP4 compressed versions are also available. For most people, it is as if an American startup decided to publish the detailed plan of a cutting-edge electric car engine to revive the race against Chinese giants, with assembly manual and compatibility guaranteed. NVIDIA ships the first RTX Spark laptops to run agents locally
On Friday, October 16, 2026, NVIDIA started shipping the new RTX Spark laptops, which had been open for pre-order since October 7. The machine packs a twenty-core Grace CPU, a Blackwell GPU, and one hundred and twenty-eight gigabytes of unified memory, with about one petaflop of FP4 compute. Several major OEMs are selling it, including Microsoft with the Surface Laptop Ultra and seven other partner brands. It runs unthrottled a model like Qwen 3.8 Flash Next 125 billion, plus the Hermes Agent, OpenClaw and Perplexity Portable Computer agents. Compact desktop versions arrive in November, followed by the DGX Station dedicated to Windows. NVIDIA sums up its strategy : 2026 is the year of agents that run locally, without depending on a remote cloud. Source : https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2026/10/16/rtx-spark-laptop-delivery
The US competition watchdog opens a federal investigation into OpenAI, Anthropic and an outside lab
On Tuesday, October 14, 2026, the US Federal Trade Commission sent official investigative demands of more than fifty pages to OpenAI, Anthropic and to the independent lab METR. It is requiring them to hand over security incidents, safeguards, marketing material and privacy policies, plus compelled testimony from the named executives. The investigation, opened several weeks earlier by FTC Chairman Ferguson, cites two incidents : the Hugging Face platform leak of July 2026, and the Claude Haiku 4.5 agent case where a false homicide tip was sent to the Philadelphia police. For most people, it is as if, after two major accidents by an airline and an independent safety alert, the federal authority decided to grab the maintenance logbooks of the airline and of the independent auditor that had reviewed it just months before. Apple prepares a real-world test of its AI in China
On Wednesday, October 15, 2026, Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed that a beta version of Apple Intelligence would be deployed in China by end of October, leaning on Chinese technology from Alibaba Qwen, and doing so outside the traditional Siri path. Three AI models have been registered with Chinese authorities : Apple Intelligence itself, Alibaba Tongyi Wanxiang, and Alibaba Qianwen. For most people, it is as if an American carmaker decided, for the first time, to sell a premium sedan equipped with a premium Chinese engine, promising Chinese buyers that local norms and app ecosystems would be respected. Chinese startup Manus AI raises five hundred million dollars after Beijing vetoes Meta deal
On Wednesday, October 8, 2026, the Sino-Singaporean startup Manus AI secured more than five hundred million dollars in a funding round led by Boyu Capital and IDG Capital, the first major round since Chinese authorities unblocked Meta's attempted acquisition of the company. The targeted valuation is around four billion dollars, double the price Meta initially offered. Reported annual recurring revenue reportedly reached five hundred million dollars in September, up from just one hundred million when Meta's acquisition was considered. For most people, it is as if a Chinese express-delivery startup, whose takeover by a US giant had been blocked at the top, proved it was worth more raising money on its own than selling, and forced the market to look at its local champions with fresh eyes. 📊 Trend
Three big lessons from October 17, 2026. First, trust in AI agents has become a matter of audit, not just marketing : Perplexity publishes the source code of its isolation toolkit with proof of zero leaks across one hundred and eight attempts ; Anthropic lets an outside team sit at the same table as its own employees with no publication veto. For production deployments, that is a wake-up call : the best industry players now accept to make verifiable what they claim about safety. Second, the race for openly accessible large models keeps accelerating : Ling-3.1-flash from Ant Group (560 billion parameters under MIT license) and Beam 1.0 from Reflection AI (501 billion under Apache 2.0) join Mistral's Le Chonk in the trio of very large open models released this quarter, with the next Chinese step hinted to be LingCode, specialised in agent code. Third, the three-tier audit framework (Tier 3 METR, Tier 2 SecureBio and Faculty, Tier 1 Accenture) set up on Thursday October 15 will have ripple effects : auditable compliance is becoming a precondition for marketing the most advanced agents, reinforced on Friday October 16 by NVIDIA shipping local RTX Spark machines able to run full agents without depending on a foreign cloud. The day's big convergence : agent sovereignty is no longer only a software story, it is also a hardware story, a proof-of-security story, and an independent-audit story.
